When it comes to irrigation systems for your farming operation, hard hose irrigators and water winch irrigators are often compared. The key difference? Water winches use soft hose systems, while hard hose irrigators offer distinct advantages in setup efficiency, speed control, and overall versatility.

Paddock Size

The size of your paddock is the primary factor in determining what irrigator you’ll need and the overall hose length required to cover your irrigation area.

Hard hose irrigators are significantly easier to set up and move than water winches, providing greater versatility in matching machine size to paddock size. You’ll also need to consider obstacles like tree lines, powerlines, and fences : all of which affect how your irrigation runs are configured.

Hydrant Positioning

Hydrant placement plays a major role in system sizing and positioning. For example, if you have a rectangular paddock with your mainline and hydrants running through the centre, a hard hose irrigator can be positioned centrally and run out in any direction, effectively halving the hose length required. This reduction in hose length can deliver substantial cost savings.

Water Availability

Water availability, determined by hydrant pressure and your pumping facility’s flow capacity, is the most influential factor when selecting hose diameter for either system.

As a general guide, a mid-range hard hose irrigator or water winch with an end cannon typically requires around 7.5 bar (108 psi) at the hydrant and 18 litres per second (approximately 56,000 litres per hour). These specifications deliver wide water distribution through the end cannon.

However, machines can be sized to suit a wide range of flow rates and pressure options specific to your operation.

Water Requirements

Different crops have different water needs, and this influences system sizing. Crops requiring larger water volumes may need larger diameter hoses to deliver the necessary flow.

Hard hose irrigator versatility excels here. Each machine is matched to the hose it carries, the winding speed is highly adjustable and can be computer-controlled. Slowing the speed applies more water to your crop : speeding it up reduces application rates.
